<image:caption>I’m so glad that I have this comparison. Although the grain is still ever-present, in the second session it no longer makes the print super noisy, now it is just a feature, and the lines are so much clearer. The white of the paper pops through so nicely!</image:caption>

<image:caption>After that, I switched from ordinary copier paper to more high-end paper. I picked up this AWAGAMI Okawa Select paper from the actual Awagami Factory workshop in Tokushima when I visited Japan last year. (Did a whole papermaking workshop that I can tell ye all about another time. FYI, this is sooooo not the paper I made. Mine pales in comparison lol.) I wanted to see the difference between prints done on different paper but I struggled with this. Specifically wetting the paper. How wet does it need to be? How long should I wait? How long is too long to wait? Also, which side do I print on? Smooth or rough? So I know that I did things wrong and each paper was a different dampness. No control for this experiment, sorry…</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - bottle of honeysuckle - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>I think this is one of my favourites yet! Of course I do love honeysuckle, both the look and smell, so I might be biased… I held back on adding too much to the label, wanting to keep it not too busy (and being lazy). The colours aren’t exactly mirror images of each other, but that’s okay, I’m not too bothered about it. I quite like the yellow instead of the orange although now that I’m thinking about ginger beer… Eh it’s fine, we’re talking about the spice, not the colour, okay? The flower petals came out nice, clean and simple, so I’m happy about that. No idea why I keep being drawn towards that rusty brown background colour… maybe one day I’ll try something else. But I think the shadows work well here, giving it weight and presence so it’s not just floating on the page. The bottle with all of its reflections turned out well. Those little bits of white on the lip of the bottle… nice. Overall, I think I’d call that a success!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - bud vase #3 - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Oh look, a background that isn’t beige! I think they call this.. growth? I like the composition (I’m enjoying the overhead shots recently) and I like the flowers, although I know I’ve done better ones in the past. But I kinda like the loosey-gooseyness of the lines and colour blocks. It’s not perfect, but you still know it’s a flower, so it works.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - bud vase #3 - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Then I edited it a bit afterwards, blurring some of the leaves and flowers like they are in the original photograph but… it didn’t make a significant difference. (The blur is in the right image, in case you can’t spot it. It’s subtle. Even I can’t really see it and I’m the one who drew it, lol.)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Edits - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>So, I’ll be honest, when I was initially finishing up this drawing, I noticed I had left a big gap in the middle of all the flowers and leaves in the center and I got lazy. I did a quick filling in with random green shapes and called it a day. Buuuuut, it kept bothering me. So I have since gone back and fixed it. Now that middle section looks A LOT better. I also looked back at the original photograph and took into account focus and depth of field, so I blurred a few of the leaves that would have been closer to the camera to recreate that sense of perspective. There’s no rule against going back and reworking a drawing you’ve already done. Sometimes you just need a bit of time or (heh) perspective to see things you might have missed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Mokuhanga Studies #1</image:title>
<image:caption>So, I chose two colours from my set to mix: cobalt blue and oxide of chromium (it was also labeled koke green on the back so I might just call it that from now on.) 1. To get my preferred colour, I mixed 3 drops cobalt blue and 3 drops koke green into my container (a washed out yoghurt tub) and with a brush (that I had already dipped into water) I mixed the two. That was the darkest colour on the page. 2. Then I watered it down by adding more water into the tub. This greatly reduced the intensity and opaqueness. 3. It was a bit too watery for my taste though, so I added an extra drop of each of the colours. This third mixture was what I used to start printing with.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Mokuhanga Studies #1 - What did I learn?</image:title>
<image:caption>Well, for starters, I should probably read my notes beforehand and not skim through them when I’m in the middle of printing… When I first started inking up, I had no idea how much nori paste to put on. And even afterwards, I still don’t know. First I only but a little bit on, then by the end I think I was pretty liberal with it. Did I see a difference? …Kinda? I feel like I have to work with it more. Something concrete that I did learn was that, when applying my mixed up pigment I used the same brush I mixed it with… yeah, that was a mistake. There I was, slathering it on, when I realised oops, I was using the wrong brush. I should have been using a sosaku bake brush, which is handleless. Also, I was putting way too much pigment on the block. You don’t actually need that much. Otherwise, it just pools in the larger carved out areas.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Mokuhanga Studies #1 - Btw, this woodblock design isn’t mine. This is me just copying a famous print by Ichijo Narumi (1877-1910).</image:title>
<image:caption>I chose it because it only has two colours (the hair is supposed to be black but I never got around to it) and the lines seemed like something a beginner like me could work with. (I’ve always carved mdf, never proper wood.)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - bird’s-eye-view - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m enjoying the background colours of this more than my previous two drawings. Not too sure about the shadows but they get the job done, adding a bit of depth to the image. I am in love with the greenery that I drew, I think that turned out so well, (a little triumph as Prue Leith would say, for all those British Bake-off fans out there.) I think I love/hate drawing roses. They come out looking really cool but man are there so many layers that it takes forever to draw. But practice makes perfect and I feel like I learn something every time I do a drawing, whether that is a new feature on Photoshop or discovering a better, more efficient way of doing things. Everyday is a school day, as they say.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - flowers in a can... - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>I also think that the line that divides the table and the wall… I think I should change its angle. Instead of just a straight line, maybe I could angle it to make the composition more interesting. More slant (/) than flat (—). I also feel like, if I were to change the background colours, it wouldn’t be too hard to change the colours of the can. The flowers and leaves would stay the same, maybe the tonal value could be adjusted… but the background and can colours could easily be changed to suit and compliment each other than the grey/brown with the blue right now. And again, just like with the previous drawing of the thistles, it would be interesting to take the can and flowers out and place them in a different setting, like the office I suggested before. Or it could be a kitchen table, or on a windowsill in a bedroom… anywhere really.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - thistle flower arrangement - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>On the left we have the original photograph that I took and then to the right we have the digital drawing version that I did in Photoshop a few days later. Honestly, I love it. I love how the olive oil bottle turned out as well as the flowers. I think I need to do something with the background though… It’s fine and all but it seems very plain. Maybe I could change the colours… Or add more details…. maybe some texture to the surface, make it into a wooden table… some wallpaper or brick for the background… we’ll see. I’m also thinking that on it’s own it’s fine, but, if I isolated the bottle and flowers, picked it up and placed it into a scene… I think it would really thrive. I can just imagine a room filled with stacks of books, papers and pens everywhere, maybe a half-finished plate of food balanced on the arm of an armchair in an office, all very Ghibli-esque… with this flower and ‘vase’ resting on an office table or somewhere else in the scene… yeah… I’m liking this the more I think about it! On another note, I’m thinking that that top thistle would make a lovely print, a small one, to get me back into the swing of printmaking again. (I know the drawing itself is not perfect. If you zoom in you can see where I did not quite colour in between the lines and where I’ve done rough lines rather than precise and perfect ones. But I think imperfections like this make a piece of art very human. In a time where AI is growing in power and it has become more difficult to differentiate between computer-generated and real-person-generated art, I think ‘flaws’ should be encouraged. It shows that a human made this —it’s real. Even if I did draw it on a computer.)</image:caption>
